Gifted relationship
No other time of year is as laden with expectations and stereotypes as Advent and Christmas. We hear that we should find quiet moments, realise what truly matters, and be close to others and ourselves. At the same time, the world continues to suffer from wars, poverty, and a climate crisis. We are plagued by guilt that we are better off, and we fall into despair, feeling we can do little to change it. In our personal lives, the urgency of this season often lays bare our own shortcomings. The Christian message does not deny any of this: it is rooted in the fragility of humanity, the world, and nature, but it places goodness and trust before it. The child, who is a symbol of this season even in the post-Christian world, is an image of a new beginning. Our relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the world is not primarily a demanding task, but a gifted opportunity.
