Ghost Island

An island with a dark past and a right to justice

On a beach, writer Mercer Mann is marrying her boyfriend, Thomas. The couple are being wed by Bruce Cable, the well-known owner of Bay Books bookshop.
After the ceremony, Bruce tells Mercer, who is searching for a subject for her next novel, that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. It concerns a narrow strip of a barrier island just off the north coast of Florida.
Three hundred years ago, it was settled by freed slaves, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last of them was forced to leave. This is the now-elderly Lovely Jackson, who deeply loves her birthplace and its remarkable history. But now, a ruthless development giant is after the land, wanting to build a resort and casino there. However, Lovely knows the island rightfully belongs to her. Together, Mercer and Lovely embark on a challenging fight.
They will take on a powerful corporation, its lawyers, lobbyists, and influential politicians. What's more, Lovely knows something that could fundamentally thwart the developers' plans: the island is cursed. For almost a century, it has remained uninhabited for very good and very disturbing reasons...

John Grisham

He studied law at the University of Mississippi, then worked as a lawyer and, for a time, in politics. He debuted in 1989 with the title A Time to Kill, published by the unknown Wynwood Press after 28 publishers had refused it – to their detriment, as it later turned out. His very next book, The Firm (1991), was a phenomenal success: it remained on The New York Times bestseller list for almost a year – and every new legal thriller by the author has followed a similar path year after year since. Grisham has become a cult figure and a recognised authority in the genre of courtroom stories, but he has also managed to step beyond its boundaries with the publication of the non-fiction book The Innocent Man (2006), in which he retold the true story of a man unjustly sentenced to death by the American justice system. However, he also enjoys occasionally departing from legal themes (including Mississippi Stories) and venturing into other settings, most often sports (the novellas Bleachers, Playing for Pizza, or Calico Joe). Grisham's novels are published in more than forty languages, and with nearly three hundred million copies sold worldwide, he is one of the most-read and most successful writers of our time.
