Geoffrey Chaucer: the Canterbury Tales

The Canterbury Tales have been a world literary classic for more than six hundred years. The main reason, why they're still a lively read, is a fact, that Geoffrey Chaucer, a royal squire, customs officer, occasional diplomat and poet, he didn't write an intellectual work in a closed courtly environment, typical of the literature of the time, but full-blooded stories about life in all its forms; his stories are a haunting picture of a great country at the end of the Middle Ages and its inhabitants, of both the noble and the non-noble, the rich and the poor, both kind and calculating, intelligent and stupid, i.e. people with all their virtues and vices.1.
