On the Trail of a Baffling Case
A Cold Day for Murder, by Dana Stabenow, translated by Hana Laryšová
KATE SHUGAK AND MUTT ARE ON THE TRAIL OF ANOTHER BAFFLING CASE. Spring has come to Alaska and the warm south wind has brought a thaw, flooding the reservation with slushy snow. Private investigator Kate Shugak, in addition to a heap of other things, has to deal with one long-overdue matter: filing her tax return. But if some people have bad luck nipping at their heels, she must be up to her neck in it, and if some days are bad, this one is the king of them all. Not only does Kate have to deal with enraged grizzly bears and the stubborn members of a feuding family, but a jet engine crashes into her backyard. Annoying agents from the National Transportation Safety Board investigating the accident and a dead body in the woods behind her house are the proverbial icing on the cake. Although Kate initially intends to distance herself from the police investigation, she can't just stand by idly, and before she knows it, she and Mutt are on the trail of a dangerous murderer.
