Rugged nature, strong characters. Although Klostermann's books may seem archaic to some today, the inimitable depiction of the Sumava nature and its inhabitants and the captivating language are still impressive after more than a hundred and thirty years. As in all his books, the author brings us to the inhospitable places of his beloved Šumava. It is not only the unrivalled depiction of the Šumava countryside and the captivating language that readers of Klostermann's books are still attracted to today. The writer portrays the harsh characters of the inhabitants of the mountain valleys with understanding and never condemns them - not even the gamekeeper who killed several Bavarian poachers with his own hand - although he admits that such deeds are not morally acceptable to him. The rough moors, impenetrable forests and hard life have formed strong characters. But Klostermann also understands those who flee from this corner, even if they return after a while. The local people can sacrifice everything for Šumava - their relationships, health and life. And Karel Klostermann reminds us of this even after more than a hundred and thirty years.
