From autobiography to autofiction
What forms can life stories take?
In recent decades, autobiography and autofiction have enjoyed increasing popularity, and writing about one' s own life and its reception have undergone dynamic development. In the book, the author links these changes to broader cultural changes, developments in the field of literary theory and psychology, and transformations of lived reality and the media landscape. At the intersection of autobiographical studies and narrative theory, it examines how contemporary autobiographical and autofictional narratives, using innovative techniques, relate to the conventions of autobiographical writing and self-narratives in general. It shows how texts portray self-knowledge and the construction of identity, problems of remembering, or feelings of (dis)continuity of one' s own existence in time. The theme of identity permeates the entire exposition, and the book thus also provides insight into the generally human process of forming one' s own image among others.
