František Hrubín: Sunday in August
Radio version of the famous performance of Hrubin's play at the National Theatre. Again directed by Otomar Krejci and with almost the same cast. The story of this lyrical comedy takes place over two hot days in a small South Bohemian village. Summer guests and local youth gather on the shore of the pond. Hrubin's play, as is typical of his entire poetic oeuvre, is about the conflict between youth and old age, life and death.
Luděk Munzar recalled his first meeting with František Hrubín during the staging of August Sunday years later: "I had no idea what a poet should look like. Suddenly there sat a nice gentleman, long, modest, quiet. Once at a rehearsal Hrubín came to me and said: "You know, those guys in the country are just like that, I know them, don't take it. " So I said I'm not taking it either. And he says to me: "You're from the country too, aren't you? "Well. "I am Franta, you are Ludek. " "I can't do that, don't be angry. " "I insist. " Well, that's how our friendship began. "
