The first volume of the late 19th century Glass Saga series about women from a glass family
In the Thuringian village of Lauscha, life has been the same for centuries. Local glassmakers were renowned for their art, which they passed down from father to son. Joost Steinmann ran a successful family workshop despite having only three daughters. But when he died unexpectedly, Johanna, Ruth and Marie were left penniless. How are three lonely women supposed to survive in a man's world?
According to tradition, glassblowing was reserved for men only, women could only help with the decoration. They had no choice but to take a job with a competitor. But even a day's work did not provide them with enough resources to survive.
The eldest Johanna therefore went to the city where she became an assistant to one of the local merchants who sold glass all over the world. Ruth decided to get a rich husband and the youngest Mary, still dreamy and silent, was so captivated by the sparkly magic of glass that she broke all the rules and secretly sat by her father's stove. But all three will have to overcome many obstacles and join forces to fulfil their dream of independence and freedom.
