Forest in the house
An unexpectedly chilling novel from the bestselling author of Hana, Tiché roky, and Listopád
They call her 'Cácora'—the little squirt. It seems she's an accident, an unwanted extra in the world. Her father vanished somewhere in the floods, and her mother escapes responsibility through lovers and alcohol—leaving the little girl in the care of her resentful grandmother. The grandmother runs a garden centre and is convinced that everything bad in life can be eradicated like voracious slugs. Or simply never spoken of. But all around is a forest hiding something dreadful, and one day, Cácora begins to talk…
Alena Mornštajnová has written a powerful and dramatic story showing that nothing in life is as it first seems, and that no secret is ever buried so deep that it cannot be dug up. You will be scared, but you won't stop reading until it all comes to the surface.
Czech Bestseller of the year 2023 in the Readers' Choice category
What the critics say:
Through compelling stories set against the backdrop of historical upheavals, Alena Mornštajnová has become a star of the contemporary Czech literary scene.
- Soňa Kacerovská, iDNES.cz
I wanted to write a book about how hard it can be to tell truth from lies, how difficult it is to stand up to evil, and how some choices that might seem simple to onlookers are indecipherable and insurmountable for the person at the centre of it all. I wanted to clarify for myself why these things happen and why they are so hard to confront.
