A compelling story about two girls and their beloved horses, in which present-day events in Italy intertwine with those of the Second World War. When her grandmother Loretta takes Lola to Siena, her hometown in Italy, for the summer holidays, Lola learns about her family’s history, deep sorrow, and adventures that date back to the Second World War. In 1945, Loretta was called the Wild Spirit. She earned the nickname for her fearlessness and her victory in the famous Palio horse race, which was held every year in Siena until the war broke out and deprived Loretta of what was most precious to her. This event would mark her life forever. Lola seizes the opportunity and enters the modern-day Palio race on her beautiful horse, Nico. Will she manage to win and pay tribute to her grandmother?
