Exile

The audiobook Exile, written by Simon Scarrow, translated by Jaroslav Žerávek. Read by Marek Holý, directed by Miloš Vrána. Quintus Licinius Cato #19 It is AD 57. Seasoned veterans of the Roman army, Tribune Cato and Centurion Macro, are returning to Rome. Due to the failure of the recent campaign on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire, Cato faces an unfriendly reception at the imperial court. He is stripped of his rank in the Praetorian Guard and also loses those close to him, as Macro and Petronella set off for a new life in the province of Britannia. Emperor Nero finds himself in an awkward situation. He has fallen in love with a former slave, Claudia Acte, but his political opponents are trying to exploit this weakness. Therefore, at the instigation of his advisors, he sends his mistress into exile in Sardinia. Cato, who finds himself an undesirable person in Rome after his dismissal from the Praetorian Guard, is assigned the task of accompanying the woman to Sardinia. Cato is given another task. As the commander-in-chief of the Roman garrison on the island, he must deal with rampant banditry. Contrary to expectations, however, he must face an even more dangerous, invisible, and deadly enemy – the plague. Will he succeed in suppressing the unrest on the island before the disease decimates his soldiers? SIMON SCARROW Simon Scarrow (born 1962, not 1969) was born in Nigeria. After returning to Britain, he studied history at the University of East Anglia and then taught the subject at City College Norwich. He specialised mainly in Roman history and organised educational trips for his students to Roman monuments and museums, during which he further deepened his knowledge. He eventually decided to put all this knowledge to use and began writing the kind of books he would like to read himself – thrilling military stories from the period of the Roman invasion of Britain. He is known primarily for the Eagle series, a Roman military fiction set within the Roman Empire, concerning the second invasion of Britain and the subsequent long-term campaign of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He became famous for a series of novels whose main characters are two Roman soldiers – the experienced warrior Lucius Cornelius Macro and his deputy, the promising young recruit Quintus Licinius Cato, who fight under the sign of the eagle. In addition, he is now working on a new series, “Revolution,” which is set in the era of Napoleon and Wellington. MAREK HOLÝ A Czech actor and voice artist, he graduated from the Brno Conservatory. He chose an engagement at the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava over studying at JAMU. His journey continued to Prague, where he worked for several years at the Na Fidlovačce Theatre. Since 2013, he has been a member of the acting company at the Vinohrady Theatre. He is a recipient of the 2013 Thalia Award in the operetta/musical category for the title role in the musical Zorro, staged at the Hybernia Theatre. He has appeared in several television films and series (e.g., Četníci z Luhačovic, Co ste hasiči) and also placed 3rd in the 19th edition of the Invisible Actor poll, which honours work for radio. He is a very popular and respected voice-over artist and audiobook narrator.
