David H. Thoreau: Walking

The American philosopher and poet Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) is considered the founder of the nature essay in modern world literature. In his wanderings through nature, Thoreau often encountered various forms of wildness, which attracted him with increasing intensity. He wrote a lecture on the subject called "The Wild", which he gave for the first time in 1851. However, he continued to expand it and eventually divided it into two parts, the second of which was entitled "Walking". Then, in 1862, shortly before his death, when he was editing some of his works for publication, he merged the two parts again and called the resulting essay "Walking".
