As a scribe, John the Pilgrim participates in councils that discuss the union of the Western and Eastern Christian churches and the defense of Byzantium from the Ottoman threat. At first, an inexperienced young man, yearning only for books, discovers the big world, the behind-the-scenes of negotiations, in which the truth is often pushed out the door. He meets men who changed the face of the world – the philosopher Nicholas of Cusa, the poet Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, also known from Czech history, and the Turkish sultan Mehmed the Conqueror – and beautiful and noble women willingly open their arms to him…
