A stolen child, mysterious voices and murder: Lizzie Martin uncovers dark secrets

The year is 1864 and Lizzie Martin leaves London for the south coast of England to become a companion to Lucy Craven, a teenage girl living in seclusion with her aunts who has recently lost her baby daughter. On the way, Lizzie meets Dr Lefebre, who is heading in the same direction. It soon transpires that Lefebre is a psychiatrist hired by Lucy's relatives to determine whether the young woman is insane. Lucy Craven does not believe her daughter died – on the contrary, she is firmly convinced that her baby was stolen. The situation soon complicates. Lizzie hears voices outside late at night, a landowner appears whose manner seems unusually familiar to Lucy, and although the young woman proves somewhat temperamental, she is certainly not mad. Tension peaks when a stabbed man is found in the garden.
Lizzie now has no choice but to ask her sweetheart, Inspector Benjamin Ross, for help…
