Dangerous acquaintances

A total of 175 letters make up the famous story in which the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil cold-bloodedly play with the feelings of those around them and manipulate them, only to become entangled in their own intrigues. The Marquise de Merteuil burns with the desire for revenge on her former lover, the wealthy Comte de Gercourt, who left her and is to marry the young Cécile. The Marquise therefore tries to make a bet with Valmont to seduce Cécile. Valmont, however, is primarily pursuing the wife of a judge, Madame de Tourvel. He therefore bets that if he succeeds, the Marquise de Merteuil will spend the night with him. The Marquise then finds another suitor for Cécile, the Chevalier Danceny, who falls desperately in love with Cécile, and she returns his feelings. However, their love affair does not progress as the Marquise had planned, and so she brings Valmont back into the game. But in the end, everything turns out completely differently than either of them expected.
