Dandelion wine

A nostalgic look into childhood from the pen of one of the most famous science fiction authors, performed by Jiří Dvořák

It's 1928 and summer has begun in a small town in Illinois. Twelve-year-old Douglas Spaulding is busy: pressing dandelion wine, running around the woods in his new trainers, having to ride a tram that will soon give way to more modern buses, and rescuing a witch's dummy from the hands of the rude Mr Black. The other inhabitants join in the summer peace of the sleepy town, but something spoils their idyll - the mysterious Lonesome Man, who haunts the streets.
Dandelion Wine presents Bradbury in a slightly different light than his works in science fiction or horror. Through loosely connected stories, the author nostalgically recalls his boyhood years in the American Midwest. But even in these memoirs, in which everyday reality is intertwined with fantastic events, Bradbury's immense imagination and sense of mystery, which readers know so well from all his work, are undeniable.

Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois. After graduating from high school, he published his own magazine, Futuria Fantasia, for which he wrote almost all the articles and stories himself. However, he soon became a contributor to major magazines such as Esquire, Collier's and the Saturday Evening Post. His short story collections The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man are considered classics of the science fiction genre, but they are also milestones of twentieth-century American literature. The novel 451 degrees Fahrenheit, which Bradbury wrote on a rented typewriter in the university library, was published in 1953. The novel was acclaimed around the world, and Francois Truffaut made a film based on it in 1966. Ray Bradbury was a multi-faceted author, writing children's books, poems, essays, plays and film scripts.
