Czech-German Literary Crossroads

Gabriela Veselá's comprehensive overview publication provides an interpretation of the history of German literature in the Czech lands from the earliest times until 1945. It traces the position of the German and Czech languages in the individual eras, records and evaluates in detail the translations of German literary works into Czech, presents the lives and works of famous and forgotten German authors, their reception at the time and their resonance in later generations. It expands our ideas about the scope of German literature and its influence on the Czech environment, convincingly describing theatre life, the activities of various associations and publishing houses, with a focus on literary local history. This exceptionally heuristic work will be of great service to all future Germanists and translatologists.
