Cubaki stationery
Hatoko is twenty-five years old and back in Kamakura, in the small Tsubaki stationery shop she inherited from her grandmother. The time has come for her to take her first steps as a public scribe, as her grandmother – her demanding and strict predecessor – taught her the difficult art of writing letters for others on commission.
When writing a letter, absolutely everything is important – not just the choice of words, but also the calligraphy, the paper, the ink, the envelope, the stamp, or the chosen pen. Hatoko fulfils even the most surprising requests from her customers. She writes congratulatory notes, condolences, love letters, and farewell letters. She gladly accommodates all requests to resolve conflicts, express feelings, and soothe sorrow. And so, thanks to her talent, the Tsubaki stationery shop soon becomes the scene of unexpected stories and even more unexpected reconciliations.
The book is also a detailed and very charming guide to Kamakura, its shrines and temples, gardens, and famous restaurants. Hatoko also guides us through the traditional customs, foods, and religious festivals in each of the four seasons.
