Courage

The second book in the cult series The Faithful and the Fallen from acclaimed fantasy author John Gwynne

The Banished Lands are torn apart by war as High King Nathair marches through the realm, fighting anyone who opposes his holy crusade.

Left to fend for herself, a young girl named Cywen must fight to survive. All her hope of escape vanishes the moment Nathair realises who she is. He has no intention of letting such a valuable prize slip through his fingers. For Cywen may hold the key to killing the one who poses the greatest threat to his path to power.

Meanwhile, after a devastating defeat, the warrior Corban and his companions flee their homeland, heading for the only place that can offer them refuge. All the while, Corban struggles with an internal battle to become who everyone believes him to be—the Bright Star and saviour of the Banished Lands. The mortal world is so consumed by its struggles for power and survival that no one perceives the greatest danger. In the Otherworld, dark forces are scheming to bring the armies of the Fallen into the world of flesh and blood, and so end the age-old war against the Faithful once and for all.

What the reviews say:

A series that promises the same complexity and depth as Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time or George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
