Couchsurfing in China

Stephan Orth loves travelling to countries with bad reputations and writing bestsellers about them. In this book, he spends three months exploring China to find out how the new world superpower works. He visits cities experimenting with total surveillance. On his couch-to-couch journey, he tries his hand at being a contestant in a basket-weaving competition, a dancing English teacher, and tests his luck in a casino – discovering the dreams and fears of the people who live there.

"Stephan Orth simply does it perfectly, and the country and its people come to life for the reader." – Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung

Author Stephan Orth, born in 1979, worked as an editor for the travel section at Spiegel Online until he became a freelance journalist in 2016.
