Confusions
A novel about the relationship between mothers and daughters across three generations, about the pitfalls of parenthood including good intentions, which often diverge from reality and are more a source of misunderstanding. The narrator is the youngest, Bětka, who, despite her artistic profession and seemingly bohemian life, soberly assesses her options and behaves mostly pragmatically. When she becomes unexpectedly pregnant by a significantly older partner who is also expecting a child with another woman, her life takes an unexpected turn, and the carefully built security collapses. The chance for reconciliation with her mother is thwarted by her death, forcing Bětka into a painful reckoning. She moves into her grandmother's house and, while renovating it, re-evaluates not only her relationship with her mother but also with her admired grandmother and her reserved attitude towards people in general. The reconstruction of the house thus represents, above all, the reconstruction of her own life.
