City

A timeless science fiction classic from the grand master of the genre

The profoundly human story of the novel City reveals to us over the centuries and millennia, through the fate of the Webster family, not only the future of humanity but also that of its companions and successors, who, as heirs to the human legacy, become dogs and robots. In eight originally separate chapters, later furnished with an Epilogue, we are introduced to the astonishing transformations of human society up to its cosmic exodus, after which the planet, abandoned by humans, is taken over by their once best friends. Now a classic, still readable and, above all, intellectually rich book, it belongs to the golden fund of the science fiction genre and consistently appears at the top of polls for the best science fiction novel of all time. It is also the most famous and most frequently cited work of the American Grand Master of the genre, who is close to our readers not only because of his Czech origins but also because of his innate humanism, which transcends the artificial boundaries created by people.

Clifford D. Simak

Prominent American science fiction writer and journalist Clifford Donald Simak was born in 1904 in Millville. As his name suggests, Simak's ancestors came from Bohemia. Simak entered the world of science fiction with the short story "The World of the Red Sun," published in the December 1931 issue of Wonder Stories magazine. During his lifetime, he wrote around 30 sci-fi novels and 130 short stories in the genre. However, only a fraction of his work has been translated into Czech. Many of Simak's short stories have been published as part of various anthologies. Simak's prose features the usual threats – aliens, different forms of being, new possibilities of existence. But his stories tell us: there is nothing to fear. Humanity, according to Simak, can fulfil the hopes placed in it if it finds enough wisdom, understanding, compassion, and tolerance for all living things within itself. Clifford Simak holds the title of Nebula Award Grand Master, awarded by the Science Fiction Writers of America. He also won the prestigious Hugo Award three times, and one each of the Nebula, Locus Poll, Analog, and International Fantasy Awards. Simak was undoubtedly one of the main pioneers of the science fiction genre.
