A poetic story about a Lydian king and his Greek friend whose fates and lives are decided by love. The most widely accepted version of the Gyges story is based on several references by Plato and on data from Lucan and Cicero. In this rendering, Gyges is a shepherd in the service of the Lydian king Candaula. He finds the ring in the cave, puts it on, and when he later accidentally turns it over, to his great surprise, he becomes invisible. He knows he can take advantage of it, and he will. It combats iniquity, convicts liars and cheats, and prevents evil. For these deeds, King Candaules appoints him his first servant. After Kandaul's forced removal by the commander of the bodyguard, Gyges becomes the queen's co-ruler and later marries her. Persons and cast: Kandaules (Vítězslav Vejražka), Rhodope (Vlasta Chramostova), Gyges (Bořivoj Navrátil), Lesbia, slave girl (Jana Andresíková), Hero, slave girl (Jana Hlaváčová), Thoas, slave (Jaroslav Rauser) and Karna, Child(Kamil Blahovec)Director: Josef MelčRecorded in r. 1969.
