Carlo Goldoni: The Clever Widow

One woman and several admirers, that's a popular comedy theme. The Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, however, treated this classic plot not only masterfully, but also originally. Four men of four nationalities - a Frenchman, a German, an Englishman and an Italian - compete for the young and clever widow. Each of them is courting, as is customary in his region. The charming Rosaura, the protagonist of Goldoni's comedy, makes the most of it. She bets on male vanity and manages not only to choose the right man, but also to marry her sister. He was to become a lawyer, but eventually fell completely into the theatre and became the most important Italian playwright of the 18th century.
