Bones under the moss
An original fantasy from the magical world of Accad, where minotaurs fight for their future
Honour is more than life. So says the Codex, which the minotaurs of the Accadian Plains have followed for generations. But now, everything is different, and the ancient values are turning to dust. The chief of the united clans knows who could restore the minotaurs' lost glory and lead them to a better tomorrow.
The question remains, however, whether he will be willing to pay the price that such a change requires—especially when it is measured in lost lives. Traditions and customs are being twisted, the gods are turning away, and more and more minotaurs are discovering that honour may not be everything after all.
In Bones Under the Moss—the first part of the duology of the same name—Zuzana Hartmanová returns to the magical world of Accad and pays homage to heroic fantasy.
About the book:
In the hands of Zuzana Hartmanová, even a genre as traditional as heroic fantasy proves to be fertile ground for an original approach and deeply human emotions. Bones Under the Moss is not just a tribute to the genre, but also a confident step forward for it.
- Jiří Štěpán, editor
Zuzana Hartmanová skilfully alternates between timelines, layering them into an interesting composition. The archetypal story of betrayal and revenge, of traditions and the fear of change, of love and death, is gradually pieced together from individual narrative fragments into an impressive mosaic. No piece is superfluous. None can be omitted. And all of them gradually draw you into the harsh world of the minotaurs, where honour is more than life, where respect is earned in combat, and where the axes are truly sharp. Yet this world is not black and white, and victory often has a bitter aftertaste.
