Before the executioner comes
Mysterious corpse thefts...
Markus Mordechai Maisel, the Primate of Prague's Jewish Town, turns to Lukáš Trobl of Květnice, a scribe at the provincial court, to investigate the mysterious theft of corpses from the Jewish cemetery. Not long after, Lukáš overhears a debate in a Prague tavern among imperial officers who want to get rid of the commander-in-chief of the imperial army in Hungary, Field Marshal Hermann Rusworm. The court scribe warns the marshal, his friend, but he takes the warning lightly. At the same time, Lukáš draws the hatred of a faction of officers siding with the marshal's rival, General Giovanni Belgioioso, and must hide from them.
After a night watch at the Jewish cemetery, he finally manages to uncover the grave robbers, but shortly afterwards his fiancée, Kordula, is kidnapped. The dramatic plot culminates in her rescue and a duel between Marshal Rusworm and General Belgioioso. Rusworm kills Belgioioso, but because Emperor Rudolf II has forbidden duels, the marshal is imprisoned in the dreaded Daliborka Tower at Prague Castle.
Will Lukáš manage to save the marshal from execution? And will the emperor's mistress, Katharina Strada, help him?
