Ludmila's friend from Wartemburg is plagued by strange dreams. A workshop surrounded by rocks and a demon that uncannily takes possession of her body appear to her in a mock rejoicing. The commander of the Johannite order calls an exorcist, but Ludmila knows that Anna is not a fool.

She starts asking around Bezděz and soon comes across the disturbing fact that other noble girls have experienced something similar. Fortunately, her husband Oldřich of Chlum is returning home with his helper, the squire Ota. They take up the case and begin to fight not only the cruel murderer, but also the superstitions and intrigues of the North Bohemian nobility.
