The transition from breast to bottle and back has never been easier! The Medela Calma system helps to extend the period of breastfeeding for your baby. Calma is equipped with a specially shaped nipple that is shaped and sized to match the properties of a real nipple, so your baby will not even know the difference. The control valve prevents the spontaneous flow of milk, prompting the baby to actively suck the milk out of the bottle. The ventilation system will ensure that excess air is taken out of the bottle and the baby does not suffer from bloating. Enjoy a sense of peace and freedom, knowing that you can feed your baby, even when breastfeeding is not possible.
When giving your baby milk using the Calma system for the first time, please do so with another adult, not the mother.
Hold the baby in a different position than while breastfeeding; changing the baby's position will help to distinguish between drinking milk from the Calma system and breastfeeding.
Prior to giving milk, soak the tip of the Calma silicone nipple with real extracted breast milk.
Hold the Calma system at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the lower lip of the baby. In order for the child to open its mouth wide enough to grasp the nipple correctly, it is necessary to stimulate the lip the same way as during breastfeeding.
When the child opens its mouth, place the Calma system on the tip of the tongue. Do not push the nipple, the baby will pull the Calma system into its mouth as much as it needs, the same way as it does when actually breastfeeding. Keep the Calma system in a position that the child chooses itself.
In order to force the flow of milk, the child must create a state of vacuum, just like during breastfeeding. Pulling or pushing the Calma system into the mouth would disrupt this process - the child could start to cough.
