The second potentiometer on the MACKIE CR4.5BT speakers is used for volume control, and the switch between Desktop/Bookshelf modes on the back affects the internal optimisation for near or far listening. For times of quiet or when you don't wish to be disturbed by your surroundings, you can use the headphone output.
