The inventor of this toy is a young art historian and antique furniture restorer, Tom van der Bruggen. His dream was to build his own medieval castle, which he had first tried to accomplish by using wooden blocks. But soon he found that the shape of the classic cube does not allow him to build roofs, windows or floors. For his own building kit, he found inspiration in the wooden beams of medieval buildings, and after a number of experiments he had chosen a 1:3:5 aspect ratio, the height being three times the thickness and the length five times the height. You will be surprised by how many different buildings you can build with elements of these dimensions.
The name of the kit, Kapla, has its origins in the Dutch 'Kabouter Plankjes', which in free translation means "elkwood" or "magical lumber". To make the toy really magical, Kapla select the best-quality wood, which is then dried, cut on precision machines, carefully sorted and planed. As a result of this demanding process, the planks are perfectly shaped with sharp edges. Children can learn accuracy, patience, and the ability to work together. The Kapla 280 kit is the perfect toy to introduce the basics of statics and concepts such as gravity or balance.
