Intel is a global brand that does not need any great introduction. For many years, it has been amongst the largest manufacturer of processors and chipsets in the world. Right now it launches the best desktop processors whose power is shifting the goalpost of performance again. In essence, this is a server version adapted for gaming applications. The Intel Core i7-6900K processor is designed for motherboards with an LGA 2011-3 socket and the upgraded Intel X99 Express chipset.
The CPU offers 8 physical cores and is part of the Broadwell-E series of processors. It uses a 14nm manufacturing process using the most advanced technology available. Each core runs at a base frequency of 3.2GHz and with Turbo mode and automatic overclocking it reaches up to 3.7GHz. Like the previous generation, the memory controller is integrated directly into the chip. It is a DDR4, four-channel memory controller that can operate at a frequency of up to 2400MHz. The processor also has a buffer capacity of about 20MB.
Because it is primarily a desktop processor, Intel has come up with an improved processor that uses the absolute maximum speeds possible. The Max Turbo Boost 3.0 feature can test each individual core and then selects the best. The upper limit of the performance difference may even be up to 15% so it would be a shame not to use it. The selected core will then run continuously at maximum frequency and the system will use the core as the preferred core.
