10 reasons why we are wrong about looking at the world - and why things are better than they look
A book so important to understand the world that Bill Gates gave it to all American college graduates in 2018. A book revealing our utter ignorance of the current state - the miracles of human progress in hard data. A book that is your new antidepressant in a world where the seemingly impossible becomes possible.
Faktomluva: úlevný zvyk tvořit si pouze takové názory, pro které máte silná podpůrná fakta.
When people are to answer simple questions about the state of the world - such as whether extreme poverty is declining, what life expectancy on earth is, or the number of violent crimes - they systematically choose the wrong answers. So bad that if chimpanzees were to be randomly matched, they would perform better than teachers, investment bankers and Nobel Prize winners.
“This book is the last battle in my lifelong mission - the fight against devastating global ignorance. In previous battles, I armed myself with large data sets, smart software, energetic lecture style, and a Swedish bayonet. It wasn't enough. But I hope this book will do its job. ”- Hans Rosling, February 2017.
Hans Rosling, a physician, statistician and science populist, explains this surprising phenomenon. It describes ten instincts - unconscious but predictable thought distortions that affect our views of the outside world. For example, the instinct of the abyss - we tend to divide the world into fundamentally different camps, negatives - we notice more bad than good phenomena, but also urgency - the feeling of "now or never" leads us to rash decisions, or the instinct of blame - not causes. By focusing on the facts, we find that the world as a whole is doing much better than we think. And that, moreover, it is improving rapidly. This does not mean that there are no serious problems and risks that threaten humanity. But if we know our deceptive instincts, we can look at the problems on the basis of the facts and devote ourselves to dealing with what is really important.
