What is Epilation?

Epilation is a from of hair removal that removes the whole hair, root included. It is a rather time consuming and sometimes painful method, but it is very effective. In addition, it does not require frequent repetition. You can epilate using classic epilators, epilators with IPL technology or wax straps.

What's Important When Choosing An Epilator?

Number of speeds, light intensity setting

Number of Speeds, Intensity Setting

  • IPL laser epilators - epilate based on the set light intensity, which you should choose according to the type and sensitivity of your skin. Most models can automatically recognise your skin type to make the process of epilation as effective, painless and safe as possible.
  • Classic epilators - a standard model should have at least two basic epilation speeds that you can regulate as needed.
Number of tweezers, number of flashes

Number of Tweezers, Number of Flashes

  • IPL laser epilators - each device with IPL technology has a set number of flashes that determines its lifetime, for example up to 250,000 flashes. In order for photoepilation to be effective, it needs to be repeated several times. On average, a person uses 300-500 flashes for the whole body.
  • Classic epilators - the higher the number of tweezers on the epilator head, the faster and more thorough the epilation will be. For beginners, however, it is advised to choose epilators with a lower number of tweezers to make epilation as painless as possible.
Power supply

Power Supply

Usually there are built-in batteries, a power cord, or both. If you choose a classic power cord, you will be limited by its length during epilation. The battery-powered models can be used without limitation. However, you need to charge the batteries regularly. Before purchase, carefully consider which power method will suit you better. The golden middle is epilators with both power supplies.

Extensions and accessories

Extensions and Accessories

Epilators often include some practical extensions that will make it easier for you to reach specific areas. Any additional equipment will give your epilator multifunctional uses, making it as effective as possible. Accessories are a pleasant bonus, whether in the form of a travel bag or case, a protective cover, or a cleaning brush for the maintenance of all the extensions.

  • Classic epilators - they can offer a classic trimmer, an extension for sensitive areas, for the face, a more robust extension for greater efficiency, a massage extension for comfort, a skin stretcher, an exfoliating brush, a shaving head comb, and more.
  • IPL epilators - they have standard body and leg epilation extensions, they can also offer a special extension for safe face treatment, a bikini hair removal attachment, a full-body peeling brush, and more.
  • Face epilators - they are usually equipped with a classic brush for the daily deep cleaning of the skin, pores and makeup removal. They can also have an ultra-fine brush for sensitive skin, a peeling extension for removing dry skin and a sponge applicator for the comfortable application of skin cream, serum or base.
Useful features

Useful Features

  • Waterproof - this allows you to use the epilator in the shower or the tub. Hair removal will be much more gentle and comfortable under warm water.
  • Battery operation - makes it easy to use your epilator at home and on the road. Additionally, you will not be limited by the length of the power cord during epilation.
  • Washable heads - makes maintenance and cleaning individual extensions easier and helps to keep the epilator clean.
  • Cooling system - will cool your skin and relieve painful sensations during epilation.
  • Swivel head - adapts to the contours of your body and ensures the most thorough epilation of all areas.
  • Application window - determines the size of the treated area in IPL epilators. The larger the window, the faster the epilation will be, because it will hit a larger area of hair.
  • Skin shade sensor - in IPL epilators, helps to automatically adjust the light intensity for a specific skin type.
  • LED light - will shed light even on the finest hairs, ensuring a thorough epilation of the entire body.
  • Battery indicator - alerts you about the state of the battery, or the power supply of a wireless epilator.

Questions About Epilation

What is the difference between epilation and depilation?

During epilation the hairs are removed from the root. Smooth skin lasts for several weeks. During depilation the hairs are only removed on the surface. Their removal is not painful, but they grow back much faster.

Is using an epilator safe?

A standard epilator has a special head that pulls individual hairs out from the root without any risk of cuts. Laser IPL epilators, on the other hand, use Intense Pulsed Light technology, which interrupts the hair regrowth cycle using light pulses. The individual models are developed in collaboration with leading dermatologists, so there is not need to worry about irritation or pain during epilation.

Is epilation painful?

Modern epilators are equipped with a number of special features and extensions to make epilation as painless as possible. These include, for example, massage and tension attachments, pre-epilation wipes and underwater application. Warm water can relax the skin and open up the pores, reducing pain and irritation. The pain gradually reduces with regular epilation. Beginners are advised to choose an epilator with a lower amount of tweezers. IPL epilators, on the other hand, guarantee completely painless epilation when the correct intensity is set.

How should the skin be cared for after epilation?

Skin care does not end with epilation. If you used wax strips, after the procedure immediately remove any residual wax from your skin with lukewarm water and soap or using special wet wipes. We recommend applying moisturising creams or oils to the skin after epilation, which will help to soothe the skin and with the regeneration process.

The skin will be red and irritated after epilation, so try not to strain it with restrictive clothing such as tight pants or socks. It should remain bare for at least an hour.

Will epilation increase hair growth?

It won't. Dermatological studies have shown that the hair thickness and growth rate decreases as a result of regular epilation.

How are epilation wax straps used properly?

There are plenty different wax strips on the market today. You can buy classic or specialised strips for specific body parts (bikini, face, legs) or for a certain skin type, most often sensitive. Wax strips are designed mostly for legs, but can also be used on the underarms and groin. Definitely, however, do not use them to remove hair from your private parts.

It is important that the hair is sufficiently long. If it's too short, the wax will not be able to hold on to it and will not remove it. Although manufacturers often guarantee reliable hair removal when the hair is only 1mm long, it is certainly safer to let it grow to 5-8mm.

Before you begin the process of epilation, wash the skin with soap, rinse with water and dry thoroughly. Take the wax strip out of the package and rub it in your palms for a while to soften the wax. Then remove the protective film and attach the strip to the part of the body you want to remove the hairs from. Rub it with your palm a few times to ensure the wax reaches all the hairs. Then quickly pull the strip off against the direction of the hair growth. One strip can be used multiple times because it contains a large amount of wax.
