The B+W F-Pro 701 MRC is transition grey filter which is made of highly transparent Schott glass. The grey transition is applied to one side of the filter with the same technology used with the anti-reflective coatings. By combining the vapours of various metals in the vacuum, a smooth thing grey layer is achieved. The glass is mounted in a F-PRO brass frame, which ensures smooth rotation of the filter. The B+W 701 MRC darkens bright areas of an image by filtering 50% of the light (-1 aperture number) while leaving the rest of the frame unaffected.
Grey transition filters are perfect for landscape photography, where they compensate for the large light differences of the scene being scanned. The F-Pro 701 is an ideal neutral filter to prevent overflows when photographing an architecture, interior or winter landscape. This problem arises mainly in digital sensors that do not have such exposure flexibility as a film negative. MRC layers provide high light transmission (more than 99%) and prevent light from the digital sensor returning to the optical system and creating a veil. The last layer protects the scratch filter and makes it easier to clean.
