The B+W F-Pro 701 MRC grey transition filter is made of highly transparent Schott glass. The grey transition is applied to one side of the filter by the same technology as anti-reflective coatings. By combining the vapors of different metals in the vacuum, the gradually receding gray layer is achieved. The glass is mounted in a brass frame F-PRO to ensure a smooth rotation of the filter. The B+W 701 MRC filters only 50% light (-1 aperture numbers) in its darkest place.
Grey transition filters are almost indispensable for landscape photography, where they balance the large light differences of the scanned scene. The F-Pro 701 is an ideal neutral filter to prevent overexposition when photographing architecture, interior or winter landscape. This problem arises mainly with digital sensors that do not have such exposure flexibility as a film negative. MRC layers provide high light transmission (more than 99%) and prevent the light reflected from the digital sensor to return to the optical system and create ghosting. The last layer protects the filter against scratching and makes it easier to clean.
