The B+W graduated grey filter F-Pro 701 MRC is made of highly transparent Schott glass. It is manufactured using the same technology as anti-reflective coatings. The gradually thinning grey layer on one side of the filter is created by combining several different metal oxide vapours in a vacuum. The glass is mounted in a brass F-PRO frame to ensure smooth movement of the filter. In it's darkest spot, the B+W 701 MRC allows only 50% of light to pass (-1 aperture number).
Gray transition filters are almost indispensable for landscape photography, where they balance the large light differences of the scene. The F-Pro 701 MRC model is the ideal neutral filter for preventing overexposure when taking photographs of architecture, interiors or winter scenery. Such light differences can be a problem mainly with digital sensors, which do not have exposure flexibility comparable to that of a negative film. MRC layers provide high light transmission (more than 99%) and prevent the light reflected from the digital sensor from returning to the optical system and creating a veil. The last layer protects the filter from scratching and makes it easier to clean.
