How to Choose an Audio Cable

Individual audio cables differ mainly by their connectors. When choosing a cable, you have to know what cable connectors you need.

• Jack - a connector type used to transmit electroacoustic signals
• Cinch - a cable that also transmits video information
• Optical cable - provides digital audio transmission

Jack

A connector type present in most consumer electronics. Its foremost advantage is its wide compatibility. It is also capable of transmitting sound from the microphone. Manufactured in several different sizes. The standard sizes are 2.5mm and 3.5mm, with most modern devices supporting both.

• TS - no ring, mono sound
• TRS - with ring (tip, ring, and sleeve), stereo sound
• TRRS - with multiple rings that transmit microphone sound
• TRRRS - with multiple rings that also transmit video

Cinch

The standard format for professional transmission of video and audio data. Connectors marked red and white (black) are used for audio transmission. Cinch connectors are commonly used in acoustic systems, as the audio channels can be changed freely. It is compatible with SCART terminals.

Optical Cable

This type is designed for transmission of digital information. The cables are especially useful for professional musicians because they transmit audio in the highest quality possible without any ambient interference.

Reducers and Adapters

These are cables that change one type of connector to another. Most convert one analog connector to another analog connector, though there are also externally powered converters capable of converting a digital signal into analog.
