Adapter or Converter?

A basic passive adapter is sufficient to convert the signal between the different analogue or digital interfaces. But if you want to convert a digital signal to an analogue, you will need a DAC converter. An ADC (analogue to digital) converter performs the opposite. However, DAC converters have a higher susceptibility to interference, which can degrade the transmission quality.

Audio Adapter

Audio Adapters are used to convert audio signals between different audio connectors. The most commonly used audio interfaces include 3.5mm and 2.5mm Jacks, RCA adapters and optical cables.

Video Adapter

Video Adapters are mainly used for connecting the TV to different kinds of video players. In addition to video, they can also transmit an audio track. The most common connectors in this category are HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, DVI and Scart.

The following interfaces can be interconnected without the need for an adapter:

• Different versions of HDMI - for example, HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.4.
• DisplayPort and Thunderbolt.1867
• DVI-A, DVI-D and DVI-I.

USB Adapter

A USB adapter transfers data between USB, micro USB, and USB-C connectors. They often include multiple output connectors, or they may have an HDMI interface or RJ-45 connector for network connectivity.

You can do without an adapter if you want to connect the following interfaces:

• USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 (formerly USB 3.1)
• USB-C and Thunderbolt.
